Rob Shumer - - No the Gun Ban of 1994 would not have prohibited either of the guns the murder used from be sold or owned. The reason the Gun Ban of 1994 was not renewed is because it did nothing to stop crime. Bill Clinton and Dems in Congress said this when it was signed into law but they did it any way as a feel good reaction to the New York shooting by Colin Ferguson.... All it was was pay back to the anti gun loby for endorcing Clinton.

Tom Hammond's mother must not have taught him the old saying - If you cant say anything nice . . . How typical of a liberal - if you cant come up with anything pertinent to say then just call names. This will get you far in the liberal "community" but the rest of us couldnt care less!

Rob Shumer - Explain why this gun was banned under Clinton's draconian AWB law. And please, elaborate on how much safer it made this country - statistics would be good.

Tom Hammond... How much do you think my grand children and great grand children are going to have to pay for your health care, prescription drugs, Gang Transit (ah I mean light Rail), and all the other social programs the democrats have put in place? I didn't even mention Government indoctrination (Education) and day care.
As most liberals believe, it is o.k. if they are spending the money.

I find it interesting that almost all of the letters in the papers from abortion opponents are written by men.

I report, you decide.

To the person who commented to Tom Hammond (7:33am): the problem is with your statement is that Republicans generally have no problem with spending. They only have problems with taxing. So they're forced to borrow money and create one of the largest defiicts in our nation's history (adjusting for inflation)

Oh and if Larry's roommate choose to respond-here's a website that shows that our national debt compared to GDP is one of the HIGHEST in history:
http://zfacts.com/p/318.html

So we've had republicans running the state and the nation and we've had higher deficits (remember Tom Hammon's comment about borrow, borrow, borrow, spend, spend, spend? How can you dispute this??)

7:43.. 7:33 here... You neglect the fact that we are in a war against Islamic Terrorists. You do have more costs spending a war AND supporting all the socialist programs that exist. Maybe we should drop a few of those. Once again, you don't mind spending my money on programs you like.

7:33, 7:43 here (why don't we all just create handles like the Strib?). Let's drop the war! ( :
I'd rather see efforts go after Bin Laden et al and not Iraqi's. I agree that we SHOULD be at a war against islamic terrorists that caused 9/11 but we're not. So we're in a war that the majority of Americans (and a GRAND majority of around the world) think we shouldn't be in.

"I Report, You Decide"? Okay Bill O'Reily.

You reported that its mostly men that are writing in and opposing abortion. Well Ive decided - maybe, just maybe, these are real men who are standing up to protect and defend life, like men are supposed to, instead of cutting it down before it even has a chance.

Why do you blame mothers for people's lack of manners (i.e. name calling)?

There is a lot of name calling in letters from the Stassens and Jason Lewis, to name a couple.

Name calling is done by every spectrum of political leanings - and it's NOT mothers' fault.

Us Republicans weren't happy with the spending either. That is why so many were voted out. The difference is the dems always spend the Reps just had a bad batch elected.

Just Shoot Him

I teach and study self-defense every day and I am appalled by Mr. Gingrich’s comments over the weekend. His comments echo a larger problem in America: that shooting someone is an acceptable solution. The killer at Virginia Tech thought so, Mr. Gingrich thinks so, spouses thinks so and shoot each other. One might rationalize away the actions or comments of these people. But sadly, a child in one of my classes recently suggested the same thing while we were discussing escaping from a playground bully. He had no understanding of what he was saying, but it was chilling to hear a 7 year old say, “just shoot him.” I do not believe more guns is an acceptable solution. I believe more guns in public equates to easy access for those legally barred from purchasing a gun. We need to reconsider our direction, really we do.

7:43, 7:33 here again, Of course you want to just drop the war.. If you want to remove that from the equation, removed the spending on it from the deficit too... And if you think Iraq didn't have anything to do with terrorism, why did they find a hi-jacker training facility in the desert that had old 747 and such that could be used? Wouldn't Sadam paying the families of suicide bombers be considered sponsoring terrorism? .... Seems that has something to do with the war on terror.

David - what kind of self-defense do you teach? Are weapons involved in your methods? Using whatever is around to defend yourself (car keys, etc...)? Or do you teach Karate or some other martial arts?

IMO, teaching people to use car keys and mace and to kick and scratch is not too wise because it forces to you get in close quarters with your attacker. Having a firearm at least allows you to have some room in between and you stand a better chance of living if you have a gun. The sight alone of a gun is typically enough to send an attacker fleeing. Will a foot or a can of mace do this?

And, shooting someone is an acceptable solution, if you life is threatened by that person. The right to self-defense is inherent - God gave us life and also therefore gives us the right to defend our lives. And through the protection of the Second Amendment I am allowed to keep and bear arms for defense (of home, of life and of liberty).

If I walk peacefully though life minding my own business and respecting everyone and someone goes out of their way to hurt me, I then (and only then) have the right to use my firearm if necessary to stop the attack. Yes, I should only show my gun if I am threatened, and I should only use it if I think my life is in danger, but I still have the right to bear arms for my defense.

Guns are not a solution to crime - thats obvious. But they are a tool, an equalizer, that we all have a right to access.

I dont think I need to get into the fact that police cant be everywhere to protect me, that the courts have ruled that police are not here to protect individuals but are for the good of the community, that its proven that more guns equal less crime, that most criminals prey on people who are weak and would benefit from carrying (women & the elderly), and prey on those who they suspect are not armed, and so on . . .

So thank you, but I think Ill keep my firearms.

Ignorance of guns is what is hurting this country, and ignorance is not an acceptable solution to crime.

Will there every be the possibility for someone to post a comment without using 'how typical a liberal' or 'how typical a conservative'? It's a little too easy for you to fall back on a broad generalization instead of using a well thought out, sound argument. Luckily, most people do not fit into your neat little boxes and are at least finding an argument that they believe in and can stand behind. I don't care if you are liberal, conservative or any other -- as long as you are actively thinking about the well being of the community at large you are on the right track (agreeing or not). I'm happy people are THINKING, period. The world will be a better place when we can agree to disagree and work together on sound resolutions.

And yes, it's possible to be a female who is liberal and against abortion and yet still be able to listen to and try to understand other peoples thought processes to the contrary without judgement. They don't change my mind, I don't agree with them, but at least I'm able to listen to them without all of this name calling and judgement. It doesn't do us any good.

Mr Hammond hits it right. The problem is 'spending'. Too many politicians only care about their re-election. And what better way to help get re-elected but 'bring home the bacon'. Whether it's 'borrow and spend' or 'tax and spend' the common thread is spending. It's time for a serious conversation about Congressional term-limits and publicly financed campaigns. Bill Luther was a master fund raiser. Wouldn't have efforts better served the people fundraising for United Way or the Red Cross? Instead his time was wasted raising money for re-election efforts. Not picking on Luther, either. Just using him as an example that too much time is spent NOT governing and we need to change that....and for us to limit the privelege of governing.

7:33, 7:43 again. Thanks for your war comments-they were some that I wasn't aware of. However, I'm still against the ideas of why we went to war (Iraq=9/11 terrorists, WMD). I will probably agree with you that I think we can't pull out immediately, not without a plan. We got ourselves into the mess, we gotta get ourselves out. I'm not sure how...or at what cost... ($, civilians/iraqi's lives...)

All my friends in the 6th district tell me Michele Bachmann's constituent service was attrocious for anyone who disagreed with her. Matt Dean shares many of her opinions, but he responds to constituents who disagree with him.

I have written 4 emails to Congresswoman Bachmann and have not received one response or acknowledgment that her office received them. I sent a letter to her Washington DC office USPS, (licked the stamp myself) over a month ago and still have not received a response.

I assume from her letter she didn't respond because my questions were not about Social Security, Medicare, or immigration they were about why she voted against small business owners and veterans.
