    • PAC budget still 'a few million' short
Comments
This is ridiculous that the PAC still needs millions more to finish this facility that few of our residents will ever visit. Why did the County fund this boondoggle when it could have funded a Marlins Stadium in Bicenntennial Park?
At least that type of facility would be more inclusive for the people of Miami-Dade

Sounds like a typical Miami scam where the taxpayers get screwed again!

Oh, yes, by all means let's give up valuable bayfront park land to subsidize a millionaires folly so that he may further line his pockets at the expense of tax payers and loyal fans. Thats a far better way to go. After all, people flock to the great cities of the world to visit their sports facilities. Everyone goes to NY to see Yankee stadium in the Bronx or Chicago, Wrigley Field or Londons Wembley Stadium. The bulk of the events the PAC will host will be far more affordable than any sporting event, especially those of the Dolphins or the Heat. If the residents of this community don't go is simply because they don't want to and not because it's cost prohibitive. It seems that no one in this community (many of our elected officials included) has any vision or even the interest in educating themselves regarding what the PAC will mean to this town and I am referring to things beyond the "high brow art perception. This will be gathering place for the entire county, with events from Jazz to Latin to R & B/Hip-Hop, World, etc. already scheduled. I'm not keen on throwing good money after bad; however, what are we to do? A). Let the project languish further, costs soaring even higher, b). Have the PAC start open in debt or the like c). Cut corners and ultimately have a mediocre mess on ours hands. And just for the record, PAC is primarily subsidized by a tourist tax and not by the citizens of the county. One should educate oneself before commenting. Alas, this will always be a provincial backwater, regardless of the efforts of the many visionaries who work tirelessly to change that.

i agree with Neil. More people in Dade County will likely go see a ball game then an opera. it's just a fact, and those big politicos should pay attention. if they are really serious about reviving downtown build somethign that will be bring the greatest numbers of people, of all ages!

How many local politicians and their pals have gotten kickbacks and construction deals from this gigantic waste of money? All this so that rich bastards can watch the opera in comfort?

The Miami Performing Arts Center is one of worst mistakes for our county. It will always need money to subsidize it. Money used for this project could have been much better used. For example swimming pools in all of the middle schools. Just think of all the minority children that would not drown if they money had been used that way. Or what about a baseball park for the Marlins. More people could afford to go to a game then to a production at the PAC. Or maybe more money could have been used to offset our outrageous property taxes. But a few connected, well heeled people in our county wanted this theater and got it. I am sure that a lot of us could never afford to go there. Oh yes I really doubt if people will make this a tourist destination.

Could the ego architecture be any more absurd? Of course it turned out to be ridiculously expensive. And no parking? Try getting a permit to build even a hot dog stand without parking - never happen.

The second half of this empire-building scam begins once the PAC opens, and we get to see what the power-brokers in the shadows have decided they want to do with TOPA, Dade County Auditorium, Olympia Theater and JL Knight center, all of which they will suddenly declare surplus or obsolete.

Everyone pays taxes, but what percentage of taxpayers want to go to the opera or ballet or symphony?

The never-ending waste of our tax dollars.

I am very glad to see completion of the Performing Arts Center. All major world cities have a great performing arts center. This center will be enjoyed not only by me, but my 2 month old granddaughter who like me enjoys listening to classical music.

My only regret is that I will not be able to sit in the front row behind the conductor as I sat for many years at the Gusman theater for the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra. That orchestra called "POOF" by the Miami Herald writers, and not supported by local governments was not able to succeed. Perhaps the new veneu will enable us to once again have high quality local orchestra.

Performing arts centers are part of our Greco- Roman Heritage and have contributed to the development of our civilization for over 2,500 years.

This center will be enjoyed by many future generations and is a very worthwhile public and private investment.

i think this is the kind of culture this city needs. I think this is something that'll give miami more life somewhere where it's devoid of it. Hopefully this center causes major parks to be built around the area so it becomes the center for public interaction.
